Patents
A United States patent is issued by the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) and grants the inventor an exclusive right for a limited time. These exclusive rights allow the owner to prevent others from making, using, selling, or importing a product that infringes the patent. These exclusive rights mean that someone desiring to use the invetion must acquire a license from the patent owner. Patents can also be acquired in foreign countries.
